Great, you have decided to take up fishkeeping as a hobby! The first thing you would need is fish tank, of course. But don’t just rush off and grab the first one you fancy.
Here are three tips to help you get started on the right footing, and get you a fish tank that you and your fish can live with and be proud of:
#1 - Determine What Kind of Fish You Want to Keep
This is an important decision, as different species of fish will have different requirements. Find out more about the fish you want to keep. Learn what conditions are necessary for keeping them happy and healthy, the equipment you will need and how to set up your tank.
If you get your aquarium fitted up before deciding what kind of fish you are getting, you run the risks of acquiring inappropriate or unusable equipment, or having insufficient space for your fish (for small fish, it’s approximately one inch of healthy mature fish per gallon of water, for large fish, it’s one inch of fish per three gallons of water).
If you are thinking of getting an odd-shaped tank, like an octagonal one, consider whether the configuration will restrict the movements of your fish.
#2 - Determine the Size of the Tank
Besides deciding what types of fish and how many of them you want, you also have to consider how big those fish will get, in order to determine the size of tank you should get.
Look through your home and select a suitable location for your new aquarium. How much space is available to accommodate your tank and accessories? Remember to cater for space between the tank and the wall for filter, tubing and cords.
#3 - Determine Your Budget
- How much can you afford to spend on your aquarium?
- If this is your first tank, how much are willing to spend on a new hobby that you are unsure of pursing long-term?
- How does your budget compare to the cost of the equipment you will need?
Shop around to find out about the various kinds of equipment available and how much they cost. If you would like a custom-built tank that is not exactly rectangular or square, you may have some difficulty finding a proper light hood, cover or undergravel filter plates for it. If you intend to purchase a customized aquarium or specialized equipment and accessories, get a quotation before committing to an order.
